Inuyasha (犬夜叉)

Inu yasha = dog + demon

Kagome (かごめ)

Kagome = traditional woven bamboo pattern or trihexagonal tiling (it’s said to ward off evil spirits).

Miroku (弥勒)

Miroku = Maitreya (Buddhist bodhisattva)

Kikyo (桔梗)

Kikyo = platycodon (balloon flower)

Sango (珊瑚)

Sango = coral

Kohaku (琥珀)

Kohaku = amber

Shippo (七宝)

Shippo = the seven holy treasures of Buddhism or enamel (cloisonné)

Kirara (雲母)

Kirara = mica

Hisui (翡翠)

*A son of Sango & Miroku in the sequel

Hisui = jade

Sesshomaru (殺生丸)

Sessho maru = murder + boy’s name

Rin (りん)

Rin = bell, to ward off evil spirits

Kaede (楓)

*Kikyo’s younger sister

Kaede = Japanese maple

Koga (鋼牙)

Ko ga  = metal + fang

Naraku (奈落)

Naraku = hell
