In episode 7, the crews of Kotetsujo are looking for bamboos for the Tanabata ceremony.
Tanabata is a Japanese festival on 7 July, meaning “evening of the seventh”.
It’s originated in a folklore story of ancient China which derives a love story between two stars.
A girl Orihime (Vega) and a boy Hikoboshi (Altair) fall in love, but the king doesn’t allow it and they are separated by the Milky Way. After that, they can meet only the night of 7th July.
At this night we can see clearly Vega, Altair and the Milky Way in the sky. So it’s also called as the Star Festival.
And children write wishes on a small piece of paper (tanzaku, 短冊) and hang them on bamboo, with singing this song.
You may remind Haruhi Suzumiya ? Yes, episode 8 in season 2 “Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody” derives Tanabata. Haruhi gives us a scientific approach to Tanabata.
Never tell me about its next episode “Endless Eight”. Forget it completely.
Anyways, you can visit beautiful Tanabata Festival in every cities in Japan.
See you in summer !
