A newly series anime, After the Rain (Koi wa Ameagari no You ni, 恋は雨上がりのように, Love is Like After the Rain) has started on January 2018.
17-year old high school student Akira Tachibana works as a part-timer in a family restaurant after school and she is in love with Kondo who is the manager and is 45 years old.
It’s an age-gapped romantic comedy.
Director Ayumu Watanabe had been working for Doraemon for long years and is praised for his technic to express various emotion by characters.
In episode 03 of After the Rain, After Akira confessed love to Kondo (2nd time) in the rain, he was very confused and murmured in car.
“Aimlessly he had been listening to the pattering of the rain on the Suzaku Avenue”.
It describes the moral ambiguity of thieving to survive.
(He is appeared in Bungou Stray Dogs.)
It’s famous for a plot device that involves various characters providing subjective and contradictory versions of the same incident.
This film won the Golden Lion award in Venice Film Festival (1951) and the Academy Honorary Award (1952) in the USA.
And it created a new word “Rashomon effect”. The Rashomon effect occurs when the same event is given contradictory interpretations by different individuals involved.
It perfectly fits to the relationship between Akira and Kondo.
Akira loves Kondo, but it’s not realistic for Kondo. He think that a young girl like Akira never fall in love with him. Because “ I’m vacant middle-aged man “ (in the last part of EP03)”.
The same event is not the same for those two.
It’s just a Rashomon style.
What a smart description !
Unfortunately, non-Japanese speakers can’t get it.
And a trivia.
Great filmmaker is Akira Kurosawa(黒澤 明), our heroine is Akira Tachibana(橘 あきら).
Akira is mainly boy’s name.
It’s difficult to explain and not important for watching this anime, haha!
By the way, After the Rain is very sensitive, tender, colorful and lovely romantic comedy.
You must watch it !
