We can see original illustrator Eiji Usatsuka‘s works there!
Zero no Tsukaima series have been published 2004 – 2017 and Eiji Usatsuka’s style of painting has changed.
In Japanese otaku illustrations, Garuge or Eroge illustrations(they are called ギャルゲ絵Gyaruge-E, エロゲ絵Eroge-E) were cutting edge in this time.
e.g. Gyaruge-E, Eroge-E
His illust was also Garuge or Eroge style.(He is illustrator of Eroge company “VisualArt’s“)
Characteristic of this style is emphasized light and shadow, color, three-dimensionality.
Volume1 – 3(2004)
Volume4 – 6(2005)
Volume7 – 9(2006)
His illust has changed into mild!!
Soft light and shadow.
I like this time! KAWAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!
Volume10 – 11(2006 – 2007)
Eyes changed softly!
Way of drawing eyes in otaku illustrations have changed to mild and soft.
Volume12 – 14(2007 – 2008)
Volume15 – 17(2008 – 2009)
Changed to colorful and more mild.
Volume18 – 20(2010 – 2011)
Head changed to a bit small.
Volume21 – 22(2016 – 2017)
Changed a lot! More clear color, way of drawing face and body have changed to realistic.
In Japan, cutting edge illustration is light novel illust now.(they are called ラノベ絵Ranobe-E)
His illust also have changed from Gyaruge-E to Ranobe-E.
Characteristic of Ranobe-E is stylish, splendid, colorful, detailed because cover illust influences novel’s sales.
I think that one of the illustration’s charm(both drawing and seeing) is enjoying transition!
